BORN BEFORE DIGITAL

Hi Edward

Thanks for inviting me …it’s a great pleasure to be featured here. Well I was born in the year 20 BD (before digital) in a little village called London-on Thames, when the world was black and white and we took photographs on strips of plastic. Lol.

Photo by Simon BarnesSeriously I was born and raised in N London but have moved around the UK ever since, and starting with a theatrical career I lived out of a suitcase for many years, so I tended to put down roots wherever I happened to be.

SHOP OF GOODIES

I started very early on looking for a way to earn money…while still at school I got a Saturday job in Dolland and Aitchison .. printing and retouching wedding photographs . .in those days with a black pencil and a scalpel to remove blemishes.

Was I ever sick of wedding photos,,,but on the other side of my door was a shop full of goodies! I still can’t pass a camera shop without wandering in.

Hmmmm…my style?? I’ve never really thought about defining it, but I know I love to work with my models to capture something that tells a story..or  captures an emotion. I’m not good at the big landscape thing...

I suppose I’m best known for my dark moody/ strong images…  having a theatrical background too helps me put a slightly different slant on things and that helps a lot. I like experimenting with style but somehow my images stay recognisable as mine. Weird?

TAKING RISKS

Fashion is always competitive..from the designing to the selling to the wearing, and that includes the photographic market. But that competition is what keeps everything fresh! Bring it on!

Photo by Simon BarnesWhat are the main differences you face between european and american photography?  Now that’s a difficult question to answer without hanging myself! I think European photographers can be more adventurous in the sense of not having the limitations of a corporate style.. ie we can take risks.

However the opportunities are greater with an American market. At the end of the day a great image is a great image, wherever it was taken.

ON IMAGES

Of course! Of course! I’m a photographer, not an author lol. Just try describing a rose if you’ve never seen one

“In” is what YOU wear ..”Out” is what the others wear!  Haute Couture is another thing all together..mmmmm!

THE EYES WIN

For me it’s the eyes and the personality… I can’t get inside a soulless person. Look at someone like David Beckham..the best non-model model. And hunger…I want my models to WANT to be photographed! I’ve always said that photography should be fun and I still stick by that.

SWEARING LOUDLY

Yes but not as often as I would like! The lens focuses and there it is in front of you..a glow..a something..and I have to get everyone to look at what I can see. I also have to admit I swear very loudly when I see what I like… embarrassing.

Dolce and Gabbana or anything that makes me look INTO the image. For older styles Coco Channel wow!  And Mary Quant… they don’t style like those anymore.

FINAL COMMENTS

Well I’m always open to offers! So if anyone knows who’s booking the next Ginch Gonch campaign let me know! Firstly you’ve got to WANT to be a model…not just because your friends say you should be.

It’s hard work looking good 24/7 and hard work building up a good portfolio, hard work finding an agent..hard work getting your first job. But FUN at the same time! Thanks for having me here..Good Luck to all. x
