Michael Morris: Tell us a little about your background? How did you become interested in a career as a photographer?
Michael Lawrence: I literally grew up around the world of modeling & photography. My family owned a model/ talent management company for more than ten years and being exposed to model shoots on a regular basis, I just naturally developed an enthusiasm and appreciation for the art of photography. When I began to shoot as a hobby, my eye for detail sharpened, and all of a sudden
I developed a desire to perfect it.
Connex247: What are your special areas of interest as a photographer?
Michael: I enjoy working in all areas of photography. Anything from weddings to entertainment to fashion, are shoots that I do. I receive the most recognition for
fitness, fashion and entertainment photography. Doing a photo shoot for a concert is one of the most energetic experiences for a photographer. When I am shooting a concert, I hear the crowd and I can just feel energy, the excitement and I love to be in that moment.
Fitness is definitely a favorite of mine as well. Some models work so hard on their bodies and I like to try to capture their strong points and show off the hard work they put in. Ideally, with fitness photography I like to attempt to work with the model so I can catch a nice pose but at the same time make it a very natural shot.
Connex247: Michael, give us some highlights or special moments in your career?
Michael: The highlights of mine have been some the celebrities that I have had the honor of photographing. I have had the pleasure of working with some very influential people in the music industry such as Janet Jackson, Monica, 98
Degrees, Destiny's Child and Christina Aguilera. But the most special moments would have to be the friendships that I have formed with models, which I have worked with. I have been able to see the models progress and by forming friendships I have been able to help models develop their careers.
Connex247: What are you most looking for in the models that you shoot with?
Michael: I just love to work with models that are creative and have enthusiasm for what they do. A positive attitude one of the best attributes a model can have.
They must have passion for their profession to succeed. I love to see the same passion in a model that I have behind the camera. The model should have a certain level of professionalism, but that is not to say that I don't mind working with someone who is new to the world of modeling. They hopefully will be able to expose their personality in the photos. Lack of personality puts more pressure on the photographer and instead of focusing on the shoot, they will end up giving a lot of their attention into pulling things out of them. A model's versatility sometimes depends greatly on how much they give to the shoot. But they must be able to work naturally and is organized.
