Edward: Hey Marco, nice to have you here with Connex247. Tell us about your yourself, hometown and how did you become interested in a career as a photographer?
Marco: Well, i grew up in a small village in east Switzerland, and moved to Zurich when I was 20. i started working as a flight attendant for swissair in '90 and my passion for photography took more shape during that time. I had always been interested, but it wasn't until i was 22 that I bought a professional camera, and started experimenting.
Edward: Do you think that digital era really helped the photographers concerning aspects like quality and tecnology?
Marco: Well, i think the digital era certainly brings a lot of conveniences with it, for photographers, and makes the work flow at lot easier. Still, despite all advances in the digital area, I believe that there are still differences to film, that can not be captured easily(unless you really know what you're doing), and therefore film still holds a great potential.I haven't shot anything on my medium format film camera in a while, but i will definitely do a few projects again this year in film, or both film and digital.
Edward: In your opinion what were the most remarkable achievements in photography in the last decade?
Marco: oy...well, i couldn't pinpoint anyone exactly, but i think with the changes everywhere, in the world, the way we live, etc, there have been some great new and old talents emerging with fantastic work.but then again, I don't keep track too much.

Edward: How is the market for the photographers in Europe? In your opinion do you what are the diferences between american photographers and europeans?
Marco: The market is tough everywhere. as I said, i wasn't always a photographer, and it's only been close to 5 years since I run my own business. It's a struggle everywhere, and Zurich is definitely not the pulse of the action. But there is work, and one has to be persistent, and have a lot of patience. If I look at photographic material in general, I'd say the europeans are definitely more into fashion with an edge, the americans more about body-culture.But there are certainly exceptions on both sides.
Edward: Your work has been published internationally in various books and magazines. Tell us about it.
Marco: Not much to tell, just collaborated with a lot of magazines and book projects, and it was all fun,but rarely pays the rent. : ) I enjoy that a lot, though, because often you get a lot of creative freedom, more so than when you have a client or a company who hires you for a certain job.It would be fun to do another book of my work one day ("undressed", publ. In 2002 is since out of print), but I see so much crap around, that I rather wait until I feel I have something new to share that doesn't endlessly repeat itself.
Edward: What do you look most when selecting models to shoot?
Marco: Since I changed from fashion to beauty, I look at the general picture in a man or woman. An interesting face, someone with charisma...but good skin is essential, a nice body almost a must in my line of work.Chemistry is important to me...if we don't click, chances are, the photos will lack the connection i usually have with my models.
Edward: What advice would you give to models and to the aspiring ones?
Marco: The ones that already "made it": keep humble,re-invent yourself, look for new horizons.there'll be someone new and younger replacing you soon enough. ; ) the ones that are new: pick up what you can, learn, and be prepared to have a lot of patience..it may take a while.
Edward: There must be special moments when you feel that you have captured a perfect picture... Share this passion with us. How does this special moment happen?
Marco: Sometimes you just know it right away, and the excitement brings added fuel to a session. and sometimes, you got a gem somewhere, that you'll only discover later on. either way, the satisfaction and excitement are what makes it all worth while.
Edward: If a model wants to work with you, how do they get in touch?
Marco: Usually, they contact me via my website (http://www.marcocarocari.com) or through their agency.
Edward: Marco, thanks for sharing your story with us. Leave a message to Connex247 readers around the world and tell us your expectations for 2007!
Marco: Well, first of all a great new year to everyone, and thanks for taking an interest in me and my work. 2007 is all about changes, at least it will be in my life, and I hope to achieve all my goals...and i hope you and your readers will achieve yours. stay tuned for new projects and work, and thank you.
