INNOCENT ON THE OUTSIDE

When asked to describe myself, I always tell people that I’m a textbook Gemini.  Everything in my life has two sides…  At one moment, I’m a big science and computer nerd, then a day later you can catch me jumping off a cliff on the ski slopes.

Most days I love to stay at home, relax, watch TV and attach myself to the couch…but then I’m also a club DJ playing music till the wee hours of the morning.  I look very innocent on the outside, but look out when I feel like being crazy…haha.

Scotty ThomsonLATE BLOOMING DJ

I never really wanted to be a DJ throughout my life.  I guess you would call me a late bloomer when it comes to music and dj’ing.  The first time I even went to a nightclub was in 1998.  Yet, I have to say, my obsession for music caught me in a flash and I was buying records even without having turntables.  I made up for lost experience by listening to house every waking moment….searching for old records so I could be “educated” about the missed years.

I think the one thing that made me decide to pursue DJ’ing was the challenge of learning a new skill.  Having grown up in a very competitive environment, I wanted to learn not only how to be the life of a party, but actually be the one who creates the party.  I saw DJ’s as the ultimate party makers.  Once I decided I wanted to learn to spin records, I was also determined to figure it out on my own.  I didn’t want another person’s opinions or creative differences to influence me.

Scotty ThomsonBECOMING A PRO

I quickly found out that being a DJ wasn’t just about playing songs.  It was HARD.  So many different factors play into being a good DJ, and I wanted to conquer that challenge.  To be honest…in the beginning, my goal was to make this a side thing… a hobby if you will.  I was deeply involved in a corporate career.  Eventually, I was working more as a DJ than I expected.  I started spreading beyond NYC and in 2005 I decided to leave my day job and become a “Professional DJ”

'WINNING' FEELING

The only thing I can attribute it to is winning a race, but winning for hours on end.  As if you keep crossing the finish line every couple of minutes in first place.  In addition every time I spin, no matter how big or small the party might be, I challenge myself to learn something new.  I think the crowds recognize this.  They see that I am constantly “working” in the booth.

Scotty ThomsonTherefore, I find myself excited not only because of the “winning” feeling, but also because I did something unique and creative.  After a short time the crowd becomes curious about what I’m going to do next.  Sometimes I tease them by only playing snippets of popular songs or putting an acapella over another track.  I also love to find songs and remixes that no other DJ’s are playing.

VARIED TASTE

I have to say that my music taste is so varied that I can’t identify with a single artist or genre.  I grew up listening to Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffet and Blondie.  I always had an obsession with music, but growing up my tastes expanded.  Unknowing that it was club music, I absolutely loved, and still love groups like Technotronic, Dee-Lite and C&C Music Factory.  At the same time, I really enjoy classical music.  Most recently, many DJ’s had a huge influence on my tastes.  Watching Junior Vasquez work a crowd to unexplainable madness was something that I’ve always strived to do.  Learning how he could change, rearrange and reenergize songs in the DJ booth was the ultimate challenge to me.

Scotty ThomsonLOSING THE MAGIC

Unfortunately, I feel like the art of being a good DJ is quickly being lost.  House music, in general, has become so commercial, that people have lost sight of what it means to listen to a great DJ work his magic.  Yes, more people are interested in listening to house.  You hear it in movies, on MTV and at every chic restaurant but now people couldn’t care less if it’s coming from a person or a computer.  There are so many DJ’s who don’t know how to mix, it’s pretty upsetting to me.  Eventually, I think the market will be so over saturated with “computer” DJ’s.  Hopefully, there will be a resurgence in demand for DJ’s like myself, who still spin vinyl.

ON PHOTO SHOOTS

I wouldn’t call myself a professional model.  I have done quite a few photo shoots but most of them were for my DJ career.  I love being crazy and quirky, but most of all I’m quite an exhibitionist.  Being in front of a camera is my way of showing my personality.

Scotty ThomsonA lot of the time my pictures are almost naked, simply because I like to be open and free.  I really believe that when I started exploring DJ’ing and focusing on my creative side is when I first considered getting in front of the camera.  To be honest, I’m very shy in front of other people, so the hardest part is letting go and feeling comfortable with myself.

WORKING FOR GUCCI

Well, I worked for Gucci for five years, so by default, I became a fashion guy.  Before that, I only wore jeans and tee-shirts.  In the Summer, it was very hard to get me to wear shoes.  Now, my closet looks like the mens department in Sax-Fifth-Avenue.  With regards to my looks…I am very self conscious.  I don’t see myself as sexy or anything like that.  When I set out to court a potential mate, I always hope that it’s my personality and charm that gets them interested ;-)

RACING SAILBOATS

Scotty ThomsonI grew up about 20 minutes outside of New York City in a Suburban town called Port Washington.  My family was very athletic and I spent the majority of my childhood on the water racing sailboats.  Being on the water all the time resulted in my becoming very inquisitive about the way things work. Sciences like physics, biology, marine biology and technology in general were a large part of my life.  The isolation of being on the water alone forced me to entertain myself by exploring these things.  I honestly believe my creativity was spawned on the ocean.

MOVING ACROSS THE GLOBE

My family also brought me SCUBA Diving and skiing across the globe.  I would have to say that my family was pretty damn crazy.  Not insane, but extremely adventurous.  My parent’s loved to have parties and always seemed to be the life of the party…I remember nights when they would bring me to bars and I’d end up sleeping on a couple of chairs till it was time to go home.

Scotty ThomsonWe pretty much did everything together and I wouldn’t trade that for the world.  Throughout my school life, I found countless ways to get in trouble.  My teachers would always say, “Scott is our favorite child in the whole school, but we want to strangle him on a daily basis.”

LOOK FOR HIS LABEL

Right now I’m focused on getting my sound and name across the world.  I have a busy schedule for the Summer of ’08.  Look for my first mix CD to come out soon.  In addition, I will be starting my own label which will feature “Alternative Gay DJ’s”.  My goal will to introduce the Gay community to DJ’s who are cutting edge and a bit less commercial, yet identifiable than your typical circuit DJ.
