Edward: Welcome to Connex247  David. It´s such a great pleasure to have you here in the site. Let´s start up with your your personal interests. Tell us about  yourself, hometown....

David: I was born in Rochester, NY, but have lived my entire life (from 4 mos. old) in Miami, FL. (except for college) As a a child I was exposed to music and art. In fact, I studied the piano, and began drawing and painting at the age of 10.

I continue to enjoy music ( singing in the church choir) and painting. I do some freelance illustration work and even hire out as a make up artist under the name DEEV.

Edward:  How did you become interested in a career as a photographer?

David:  I would probably have become an illustrator, except for the influence of my family, worried that I would be a "starving artist." What they didn't understand is that art is in your soul.... not a choice. They bought me a darkroom kit from Sears. I found the immediate gratification of photography addictive... Also the chemistry, spending a lot years in the dark.

Ricky Martin Photo by David VanceEdward:  Do you think that digital era really helped the photographers concerning aspects like quality and technology?

David:  Not particularly. I think digital serves the need for immediacy. It's a fast paced world and digital helps get the job done more quickly, not necessarily more effectively.

Edward:  In your opinion what were the most remarkable achievments in photography in the last decade?

Baldwin Photo by David VanceDavid:   Off hand I would say the advance in quality of the inkjet printer, and the general acceptance of the giclee print. Of course there is the computerization of photography with the advance of the digital era. God bless Photoshop.

Edward:  What do you look for most when selecting models to shoot?

David:  Depends on the shoot of course. If you mean for my personal work, nudes, etc. Obviously I look for physical symmetry and beauty that is either classic, or interesting... hopefully, both. I am also interested in a cooperative, collaborative spirit, and an upbeat personality.

Edward:  You seem to have helped a number of models with their careers. What do you really feel about that?

Photo by David VanceDavid: That's a loaded question. Of course, I am pleased when my photos or the experience of shooting with me helps models advance in their career. On the down side, you'd be amazed how few of them ever acknowledge my input or influence. Luckily, I never do it for the kudos. I am a beauty addict. Out of control. I absolutely NEED to do what I do.

Edward:  What advice would you give to models and to the aspiring ones?

David:  Be discerning, but be open. My favorite models are the ones who are loose, and comfortable with themselves and their bodies. I find a free spirit is key to being a good model.

Edward:  You also have a great experience shooting famous people. Tell us how did it happen?

Gregg Avedon Photo by David VanceDavid:  It was my association with the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami that started the ball rolling. When celebs would come here for a show, I would shoot them for the local ads. After that, I would sometimes approach performers after concerts, etc. Over the years, because of source book ads and online presence, I am now fairly well known.

Edward: How do u handle with these people?

David: There have been a variety of experiences. Some more pleasant than others. Often there are publicists or agents involved, and it can be somewhat complicated.

Edward: Is it the same process as you deal with the models?

Photo by David VanceDavid:  When I get to work with talent one on one, it is often similar to shooting models. People are people. I am too busy working to make the best, most flattering photo, usually in a short period of time to get hung up on being star struck.

Edward:  There must be special moments when you feel that you have captured a perfect picture... Share this passion with us. How does this special moment happen?

David: I used to be very anal about my work. Having a talent for drawing, I would sketch ideas and then use that when shooting someone. I found over the years that being so restrictive kept me from noticing what was actually happening in front of me. The best photos usually happen after I shoot the original concept, and then see something else that wasn't planned.

Todd Hunter Photo by David VanceI make a concentrated effort to be very "awake" to opportunity and outside influences.  The Crucifixion photo is a good example. The original shot was of 3 men on crosses. It was very striking, but one of the models had the most extraordinary body, so I chose to shoot him alone, just for myself. As it turned out that photo was the standout and became the ad and poster for the off Broadway show, "Matthew Passion," being produced this spring in New York.

Edward:  If you could select 5 fantastic places around the world for a shooting, which ones you´d choose and why?

David: Well, I live in Miami, that's definitely one. I love New York for madness, and the Hawaiian islands for sheer natural beauty. I have never shot in the desert or spent much time in the mountains, that would be fun. I have shot in Italy, Florence, Rome and Milan. All extraordinary.

Brian LevyEdward:  If a model wants to work with you, how do they get in touch?

David: It's best to email me at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .

Edward:  David, thanks for sharing your story with us. Leave a message to Connex247 readers around the world and tell us your expectations for 2007!

David: Embrace the Law of Attraction. More creative projects, bigger and better clients, but generally looking for great new inspirations... beautiful new talent.
